Dear Church: Get Real.

Revelation 3:1-6

Do you have a reputation for something? Do you care about your reputation? Maybe others think of you as a witty person. Maybe you have a reputation for being passionate or charismatic. Maybe people remember you as shy or quiet.

The church in Sardis had a reputation – “the reputation of being alive, but you are dead,” says Jesus. Yikes. The believers there cared more about looking like they were following Jesus than actually following Him. They cared more about conforming to the culture than holding on to their integrity. Jesus told them, “Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God” (Rev. 3:2, ESV).

We need this same wake-up call, the call to follow Jesus with our whole hearts, despite what the world says or offers. We need to repent of our desire for conformity. We need to get real.
