Have you ever taken a stand – even a humble stand – that salvation is found in Christ alone – and that people who refuse to put their faith in Jesus Christ will be eternally punished in hell? Maybe someone you work with or go to school with – or maybe even a relative – hears you say that and reacts strongly. Your commitment to the Bible’s teaching that salvation is found in no other name but the name of Jesus Christ strikes your co-worker or classmate or relative as repulsively narrow, even bigoted.
You don’t fit their border-less paradigm that everyone goes to heaven – at least all good and sincere people go to heaven, whether a member of Christendom, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Bahia, or even atheism. And, so your commitment to Christ and Christ alone as they way to be right with God rubs them the wrong way – strongly rubs them the wrong way.
We all want to be accepted. We all crave approval. None of us likes being condemned or ostracized by co-workers, classmates or family members. But here’s the question: Whose acceptance should we really seek? Whose approval should we be living for?
