He Who Gives Life

Luke 20

In 2014, Brittany Maynard, an American woman with terminal brain cancer, decided that she would end her life, advocating for the legalization of assisted suicide. Her story made headlines around the world. On her final FaceBook post she wrote: “Goodbye to all my dear friends and family that I love. Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness, this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me … but would have taken so much more.” News sources reported that she did indeed take her life on November 1, 2014, surrounded by her loved ones.

In the weeks before her death, Maynard became the face of the United States right-to-die debate. Arthur Caplan, of New York University’s Division of Medical ethics, wrote that because Maynard was “young, vivacious, attractive … and a very different kind of person” from the average patient seeking physician-assisted dying, she got people in her generation interested in the issue.

As Christians, how should we respond when we hear stories like Brittany’s? How does God feel about life? About people made in His image choosing to end their lives when they determine? Or choosing to end others’ lives? Join Pastor Nate McLaurin as we go to the Bible seeking to learn about the Giver of Life.
